Mechanical Design Lead

We are hiring for a Mechanical Design Lead to join our growing technology company based in Fareham. If you have a passion designing using 3D CAD, ideally SolidWorks, and experience as a team lead – we would love to hear from you!

As the Mechanical Design Lead, you will work within our engineering team ensuring products meet customer and market requirements across a wide range of technologies and industries, and also be involved in the design of mechanical and electromechanical products for use in medical, oil & gas to military and industrial applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Lead, or an ambitious Design Engineer, looking to develop their career and skillset and wanting to expand on their team leadership and management capabilities. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will make a real contribution to the design team to identify, design and develop products that meet specifications, look professionally engineered and that you can be justifiably proud of.

You will be responsible for organising the mechanical design team and taking the lead role in complex projects. This will include deciding on best processes, materials and structural integrity from the concept stage onwards and being able to take a high-level view of the overall design and how the various different components including mechanical and electrical/electronic interact to provide an end solution. The nature of projects will vary greatly and involve electromechanical design, system integration and innovation based around computing solutions.

You will be a qualified and experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in designing and developing small to medium sized products within the computer, telecoms or marine industries, or similar. Experience working within an SME is essential as is your natural ability in using computer aided design packages.

 

Required Experience & Skillset:
  • At least 10 years’ experience in mechanical designs made from predominately sheet metal fabrication within an electrical/ electronic or electromechanical environment.
  • Knowledge or experience with injection moulding designs would be beneficial.
  • Experience as a team leader/supervisor within a design environment.
  • Experience designing using 3D CAD software.
  • Experience of new product design, materials selection, modern manufacturing processes for small to medium size run rates.
  • Experience of producing meaningful and accurate manufacturing drawings and assemblies.
  • Understanding of revision and change control.

Senior Project Manager

From being hands-on in the project delivery process from design conception to delivery, to mentoring and leading the project management team, your experience and knowledge will help us improve our services and solutions to ultimately ensure customer satisfaction.

As the Senior Project Manager, you’ll be responsible for the planning and running of projects on a day-to-day basis and leading and coordinating the project management team. The nature of projects will vary greatly but will involve mechanical, electronics or electromechanical design, as well as innovation based around computer hardware solutions – so experience within an engineering environment is a must!

Tasks are an important part of any project management role but it’s your personality and communication skills which will make the difference. Processes are important to follow, and you’ll help to define and develop them, but much of your success will be determined by how well the team worked together and your expertise will play a pivotal part here.

Being a seasoned Project Manager, you’ll be responsible for the more complex projects we have to deliver which typically carry a higher degree of customer-facing interaction and responsibility. This will allow you to gain a broader perspective of the overall requirements, what the customer is looking for and how we can be best aligned to deliver. So, in short, you’ll be in and amongst it all! However, you can’t do this all alone. This is where a tight-knit team is needed and where you’ll use your interpersonal skills and experience to help mentor, get stuck in when needed but also know when to stand back and let the team run with things.

Required Experience & Skillset:
  • Minimum of five years’ experience managing complex projects involving the design and delivery of mechanical, electronic or electromechanical hardware. Experience in the defence sector is an advantage.
  • Relevant degree or technical experience within a similar industry in order to be able to speak the same language as the designers and technical stakeholders the projects will be delivered to.
  • Good experience managing and leading a small team of technical people (engineers, project managers, etc.)
  • Passion and energy – a person who is driven yet wants the team to succeed and is a natural collaborator.
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to quickly and concisely impart information in a way that can be understood by a variety of people from team members to customers and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent management skills, able to navigate tough situations and make difficult decisions for the benefit of the business and where necessary positively motivate people to ensure projects are completed on time.
  • Organised and with excellent time management.

Desirable:

  • Recognised project management qualification e.g Prince 2.
  • Experience of working to the ISO 9001 standard or a professional and process-driven methodology.
  • Very good working knowledge using MS Project/MS Office products and ERP/PDM type products.
