My Internship: Discovering New Markets

My Internship: Discovering and Exploiting New Markets

My name is Valerio Feroci. In March I will be completing my six month internship with Captec in Campaigns and Business Development and it’s fair to say it’s been an experience.

To add to this, the company operates in such a specialist market, requiring technical knowledge that is not easy to acquire immediately, especially if you do not have a background in computing!I am a Masters student in Business Administration from Rome, Italy. Of course, I am not a native English speaker, so when I arrived for my first day at Captec I was a little apprehensive about how I would approach businesses to convince them that our products and services are the best fit for their application.

I shouldn’t have worried. My manager Stuart and my colleagues helped me out immensely; together we developed new ways to approach English customers. Before I knew it I was getting extraordinary results.

I was working alongside the Business Development team. Discovering, exploring and exploiting new markets across many different countries and industries – I couldn’t believe how many new opportunities I was finding for the company.

As each day progressed I learned more and more about the company and was really beginning to align myself with the company culture. Teamwork is a crucial part of working at Captec; I noticed that we all move together as a unique organism, rather than just being individuals. Personally, I found the Business Development department to be really interconnected. We collaborated closely in order to compare the different characteristics and features of markets to assess which Captec products suit which spaces. There are always discussions taking place across the whole team that enable you to learn the technical details of products a lot faster than you would if you were only doing your own research.

In terms of my own development, completing an internship at Captec taught me a number of things. As you would expect, I improved my selling techniques, but at the same time I was learning not only how to sell products to customers, but also how to sell myself in different scenarios such as meetings, presentations and over the phone. These skills will prove invaluable to me as I progress with my future career.

One of the best things about the work environment at Captec is the culture of being rewarded for your successes. To improve morale and to offer an incentive for hard work, the company established a monthly reward for the employee who found the best and most business opportunities. I am proud to say I won this award three months in a row, something I regard as a great personal accomplishment.

There’s no question that an internship at Captec requires grit, determination and high levels of motivation. But if you have all of these qualities, I couldn’t recommend the company enough. The support I received from the team and the opportunities available enabled me to grow both personally and professionally, and I thank Captec for that.
